This abnormal septation occurs, not between the DNA copies as in the wild type parent, but at the two extremities of a filament on either side of a nuclear mass. Thus three daughter cells can be formed from a filamentous mother cell. The number of DNA-less cells in the population increases linearly with time, and reaches 30 to 50 % of the population after several hours. Septation takes place at sites about IA/2 μ from the cell extremities and the size of DNA-less cells is roughly the same as that of a normal cell.
