The principal expression of it was a demand for a small annual offering of perhaps a farthing from every household, which came to be known as pentecostals because of the time of year that it was made. Once a year the people would be reminded of the cathedral and involved in its affairs.
Most of the other uses were confined to their cathedrals or dioceses. Of them the York use was the most widespread, across much of northern England. The Hereford and Lichfield uses gained some acceptance in their dioceses, particularly the former, partly because of its remoteness and insularity. During the later middle ages the Lincoln use was only followed in the cathedral, its city and the surrounding area; the diocese was too large for its wider adoption. This pattern was repeated in the diocese of London where the St Paul's use was not widely taken up outside the cathedral.
