The language of passion requires boldness. Leaders learn to speak of causes, not structures; of movements, not mechanics; of people, not statistics; of cherished principles, not mere policies. Over time, this comes naturally, but it requires the leader to leave some habits of speech and communication behind. Passion requires Technicolor, not earth tones. There is an infinite difference between the words might and must when it comes to opportunity. Followers are listening for the verbal cues that indicate passion or betray its absence.

When the apostle Paul speaks of the superiority of love over all other good things, he informs us that knowledge will pass away (1 Corinthians 13:8). Knowledge must be accompanied by other commitments and capacities. Nevertheless, knowledge is fundamental. As a matter of fact, God once spoke of his people being “destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). That is a stern warning that should get the attention of every Christian leader. Contrast the priority of convictional intelligence with the models of leadership that are often found and even admired in some Christian circles.

But our own times have made it particularly difficult. The modern carnival of worldviews includes postmodernists who deny the very existence of truth as a reality outside of themselves. This means that some people today actually believe that truth neither exists nor can be known. They believe that when we say that something is true, we are actually just paying a compliment to the statement—we are saying that we like it better than other, equally true, statements. Worse still, some of the more radical postmodernists have declared that claims to truth are the enemy of human freedom.
