The rocks on which the fantasy of a globalized, universal modernity foundered were the actual, irreducible cultural differences which the modern project wished to eradicate but found itself unable to. Nevertheless, the project of modernity did not fail completely. This produces many elisions, both conceptual and practical. We will go on to discuss some of the conceptual elisions, however it is worth just mentioning one of the practical elisions. Australian cultural studies pays little attention to the question of regional distinctiveness.
