Since shaving became difficult due to scars from the fire, Longfellow grew a beard. Poets often go through several drafts of a poem before considering the work “done.” Put your poem away for a few days, and then come back to it. The odd thing is, it was the blunt instruments in those books, those blank sonnets, that were Lowell's strongest influence on my writing.
